
Russian officials have placed a cattle quarantine in a part of the Chuvash region in the Volga area, located more than 2,500 km (1,500 miles) west of the Siberian Novosibirsk region, where a state of emergency has been declared due to a cattle disease.

In the Novosibirsk region, the forced culling of cattle has led to protests from some small farmers. Authorities reported that outbreaks of pasteurellosis had been detected in the area.
The bacterial infection has now been detected in the Batyrevsky area of the Chuvash region, according to a source within the local agricultural ministry cited by Interfax.
