Travere licenses Everest’s kidney disease drug in a deal valued at up to $1.14 billion

Travere Therapeutics announced on Tuesday that it has entered into a licensing agreement with private biotech firm Everest Medicines to develop and commercialize an experimental drug for kidney disease, in a deal valued at up to $1.14 billion.

  • Under the agreement, Travere will hold exclusive rights to develop and commercialize civorebrutinib outside China and certain parts of East and Southeast Asia.
  • Everest Medicines will receive $112.5 million upfront, along with up to approximately $1.03 billion in additional payments tied to development, regulatory, and sales milestones, as well as royalties from future sales.
  • Civorebrutinib, also known as EVER001, is an oral drug currently being evaluated for rare immune-driven kidney diseases.
  • Travere Therapeutics already markets two FDA-approved kidney treatments: Filspari, used for IgA nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and Thiola, used for cystinuria.
  • The company plans to study civorebrutinib across multiple rare kidney conditions, including primary membranous nephropathy, FSGS, and minimal change disease.
  • The drug is a BTK inhibitor designed to block B-cell signaling, thereby reducing harmful antibody production that can lead to kidney inflammation and damage. Travere also noted that civorebrutinib has been generally well tolerated in studies so far.
